I'm looking at a home theater system (and I'm a long time two channel reference audio guy ... so how well this does with music ... redbook CD, DVD-A, SACD matters most to me ... what it does for movies is strictly an added benefit, not my priority).
I also appreciate getting value ... high quality for a very reasonable price ... and I'm open to a factory refurb.

If I for example select DVD as a source, then select Multichannel input from the menu and set it to "yes" then in actuality the receiver does not switch to multichannel input but still the default 2 channel input is active?

One feature I'm looking for is the ability to bi-amp the main L/R channels using the side surround channel amps. The limitations of my listening room are such that I'll never have use for the side surrounds.

Im thinking about buying the Onkyo 989 upg2 but I know this reciever has been on the market for 3 - 4 years and im wondering if the processor in this reciever is still holding its ground compared with other recievers in the same price range. I'll pay about 2500-3000 USD for this machine.

Does anyoen know of, or have any information on the possibility or likelyhood of a software upgrade for the 989 Ver2 to support Dolby Prologic IIx ? I called Onkyo today and spoke to a support person who said they are currently "looking into it".

I just bought this receiver almost two weeks ago and I don't want to get stuck with a Lemon which will not be upgraded to PLIIx!

I received a whitepaper from Onkyo support describing the predefined RS232 commands that (among other things) lets one set the volume to discrete numbered levels and to setup the IO to record from one connected component to another without touching the physical box (the remote doesn't have these functions).
